This is another weekday Social on a Thursday requested by some members. Meet at Bolton Railway Station to catch the 11.18 train to Manchester Victoria arriving at 11.38. We then catch the tram at Victoria to Oldham Central. We then walk to the following pubs which have been recommended.

This is a Friday social so we can visit the Wigan Brew House which is open only on Friday. Travel to Wigan by bus or train depending on which is easiest. We will meet in Wigan Central at around 12.30 before visiting some, or all, of the pubs listed below. If catching the train from Bolton Station trains leave at 11.32 or 11.49 arriving 11.50 and 12.07 respectively (off peak return fare £7.20). If you have a bus pass with the trains added the fare is free.  Catch the 575 bus from Bolton at 11.10 (11.30) calling at the Crown, Horwich at 11.39 (12.00) arriving in Wigan at 12.13 (12.33) Later bus in brackets

Branch Meeting

Just a reminder that the August branch meeting will take place on TUESDAY 5 August at the Beer School, 88 Market Street, Westhoughton. Please note the change of day. The meeting will start at 7.30 p.m. Branch meetings are open to everyone so if you know someone who is not currently a member of CAMRA but would enjoy an evening with beer minded people, why not bring them along?

WhatPub

All the functionality of WhatPub and CAMRA’s other standalone websites have been moved over to the main CAMRA website, so you can access everything in one convenient place. Redirections will be set up to send everyone to the right pages.

You can also go directly to camra.org.uk/pubs to search for pubs, social clubs and other licensed venues.

All your beer scoring data is stored against your CAMRA login details, so you can take your beer scores with you to the CAMRA website. Head to camra.org.uk and click ‘sign in’ in the top right corner of the page.

You can still help power CAMRA’s campaigning by submitting updates about pubs. Just go to the pub listing on the CAMRA website and scroll down to the ‘suggest an edit’ section.

Holiday Season

Lots of people will be heading off on summer holidays over the next few weeks, if not already, and will be taking the opportunity to sample beers in lots of different places, whether in the UK or abroad. If you have an interesting story to tell about your beery adventures why not share it with your fellow CAMRA members by dropping a line to press@boltoncamra.org.uk. A trip to Torrside is always a good day out. Catch the train from Bolton to New Mills Newtown. The walk to the Brewery is about three minutes. Meet at Bolton station to catch the 9.54 train arriving at Manchester Piccadilly at 10.15. There is a wait at Piccadilly 35 minutes before we catch the 10.51 to New Mills Newtown arriving at 11.28.  The return trains 16.11 arriving at Bolton 17.21, changing at Manchester Piccadilly.  Later trains leave New Mills Newtown approximately every 30 minutes.  

There are 2 train stations in New Mills, please make sure you purchase the tickets to New Mills Newtown, not Central.

These trains need booking in advance to get the cheapest tickets. I suggest you look at the National Rail website to work out which is the best ticket option for you. Those with Bus and Train passes can travel most of the journey for free if they have the £10 train addition to the GM bus pass. You need to get a ticket from Stockport to New Mills Newtown and return if you are using the GM bus pass for the first part of the journey, Bolton to Stockport.

Without any bus & train passes, Advance singles start at £8.80 return, where as an Off-Peak Day Return costs £19.20

Bolton Beer and Cider Week is almost upon us so here is a brief guide to the events where we will be celebrating the best of beer, cider and perry in the Bolton area. Some details have still to be finalised so keep your eye on our BBCW Facebook page  and our website for updates.

Things will get under way at the Branch Meeting on Thursday 3 July at Bolton’s oldest pub, the Olde Man and Scythe, 6-8 Churchgate, Bolton BL1 1HL. The meeting will start at 7.30 and all are welcome.

On Friday 4 July there will be a tour of Blackedge Brewery, Horwich. The tour will start at 4 p.m. and will cost £20 per person including pie and ale. Details can be found on the Blackedge Facebook page.

The following day, Saturday 5 July, the King’s Head, Deane will be hosting a bowls tournament. The tournament will start at 1 p.m. and £3.00 will get you entry into the competion and pie and peas. All comers welcome regardless of ability.

Also starting on 5 July, B33R @ 33 in Horwich, our current Pub and Cider Pub of the Year, will have a tap takeover by Fell Brewery Cumbria with three cask pumps and five keg taps featuring their  beers. On Sunday 13 July between 3 and 5 p.m. you will have the opportunity to meet the brewers from Fell Brewery in person.

On 6 July at 2 p.m. we will be presenting Bradshaw Cricket Club with their award as runner-up in our Club of the Year competition. Let’s hope the sun shines so we can watch some cricket while enjoying a few beers or possibly check out some of the other excellent pubs in the local area.

On Saturday 12 July the ever popular Rivvy Beer Walk will take place starting once again from the glorious setting of the Rivington Brewery Tap, Horrobin Lane, Rivington. The Tap opens at 12 noon and their own cask and keg beers will be on sale as well as some guests. Food will also be available. The walk will set off at around 2 p.m. taking in the Rivington before heading to the Crown in Horwich and possibly one or two other bars in the vicinity. All are welcome and, again, let’s hope the rain holds off to make it a pleasant stroll.

Starting at 6 o’clock that evening Bunbury’s on Chorley Old Road will be holding a Charity Night of Music and Comedy. Bunbury’s always has an excellent range of cask and keg beers on draught plus a wide selection of bottles and cans. 

I hope you can make it to one ore more of these events and help us show our local brewers and licensees how much we appreciate their efforts to keep us supplied with good quality ale, cider and perry all the year round.

The trains to Clitheroe run every hour from Bolton. Meet at Bolton Station to catch the 12.04 train from Platform One. There are advance tickets which are very reasonable at £5.00 return but need to be booked soon. Alternatively, the normal fare is just over £11 but anyone with a senior rail card can get a discount. The pubs below are just a selection of real ale pubs but if others are a favourite we are always open to suggestion of a recommendation.

Welcome to your latest Bolton CAMRA Branch Update. Well, the promised heatwave actually appeared! I hope you were among the many who flocked to the nation’s beer gardens and gave our hard pressed licensees an unexpected but welcome Spring bonus.

Branch Meeting

June’s Branch Meeting will be held on Thursday 5 June at The Northern Monkey Brewery Tap, Unit 1 Chorley Street Industrial Estate, Bolton, BL1 4AL (not the Nelson Square Bar). Come along and sample Northern Monkey’s finest only metres from where they’re brewed. You can also see where the magic happens while you savour the beers.

Bolton Beer and Cider Week

Bolton Beer and Cider Week will take place in July 2025. It lasts slightly longer than a week, but there’s plenty to fit in. There will be tap takeovers, brewery tours and cider tastings. The ever popular Rivvy Beer Walk will happen on the second Saturday. A Beer Passport will run for the whole month to give people the chance to visit as many pubs as they can and collect stickers for a chance to win prizes. Keep an eye on the Facebook page and other social media for details.

Something for History Buffs

Every branch should have a Pubs Officer and we are particularly fortunate to have Don, who is dedicated to gathering information on the pubs and clubs of Bolton branch area for CAMRA members and the public to access. I mentioned in my last update the wealth of information available on CAMRA’s new website which includes not only data on existing pubs but also the many, sadly, closed pubs and clubs in the borough. Don has spent the last couple of months adding information to the closed pub entries so that those who are interested can look at their history both in terms of CAMRA and also local and national media. You can search for an individual pub, or search a location but if you search a location, you will need to click on the filter button next to the orange search button, scroll to the bottom and uncheck the ‘Hide Closed Down Pubs & Clubs’ box. A fine example many Boltonians will remember is the Howcroft, a great real ale pub and for many years the host of the Bolton Beer Festival. Click here and it will take you to masses of information about the pub from mentions in various branch magazines to articles in the Bolton News, plus photos. I hope you find it interesting.

Socials

Our next branch social will be a trip to Clitheroe on the 14 June and our annual trip to Torrside Brewery in Derbyshire will be on 26 July. Check out the Social Events page for details.

CAMRA’s biggest social event of the year, the Great British Beer Festival will run from Tuesday 5 to Saturday 9 August at the NEC in Birmingham. Click here for information on the festival whether you want to volunteer or simply sample the hundreds of beers, ciders and perries on offer.

As well as CAMRA events, there will be lots of local events and promotions going on in our pubs and clubs so make the most of them and let’s keep that Spring bonus going through the Summer.

Welcome to your latest Bolton CAMRA Branch update. I hope you enjoyed the Easter break and got the opportunity to try some of the Six Nations, Easter and St George’s day brews that have been on offer.

Branch Meeting

The May Branch Meeting will be held at 8 p.m. on Thursday 1 May at the Ukraininan Social Club, 99 Castle Street, Bolton BL2 1JP.  The meeting will start with a presentation to the club, having been voted, once again, Club of the Year for the Bolton Branch.

On the subject of presentations, on Thursday 15 May we will be handing over the awards for Pub of the Year and Cider Pub of the Year to B33R@33, Horwich. The presentation will be at 7.15 so please come along to celebrate a rare double win for this popular bar.

Pub Closures

CAMRA has published its data on pub closures for 2023. The headline figures are quite stark, with 1293 businesses closed across the UK and 194 lost permanently through demolition or conversion to other uses. Although there have been some openings too, these tend to be town centre bars and do not replace the community locals which are too often the casualties. It is often said that the battle for cask beer has been won and it is true that real ale is now available in many more outlets, however, as cask beer can only be drunk in a pub or club, the closure of so many pubs means cask beer is under threat once again. In recognition of this CAMRA gives equal weight to campaigning for the promotion and protection of pubs as to campaigning for live beer, cider and perry. We campaign to help save pubs regardless of whether they serve cask beer or not. As I mentioned in my last update, it is important that we know what is going on with the pubs and clubs in our area so please keep us updated by emailing pubs@bolton.camra.org.uk or updating the pub/club details on the website. Information on how to do that is below. As, I presume, we all joined CAMRA because we enjoy drinking real ale in convivial surroundings, let’s all try to make sure we can carry on doing just that! Mild Month

In May each year, CAMRA branches across the UK celebrate Mild Month, an initiative to celebrate and highlight the mild beer style. Mild was once, by far, the most widely drunk beer in Bolton but with the decline of heavy industry in the town and the huge sums spent on promoting lager, mild was until recently under threat of extinction. That is starting to change and some local breweries, including Bank Top and Holt’s usually have a mild on sale in their pubs. On May 10, the branch will be holding a Mild Trail, setting off from the town centre and heading by bus to Horwich. It is hoped  that there will be a mild available in each of the pubs visited. Stockport and South Manchester Branch are also holding a Mild Magic trail which continues until 18 May.

CAMRA Website

If you haven’t visited the national website recently you will find that it has been completely changed and offers far more facilities than the old site. The opening page here allows you to search for pubs and clubs anywhere in the country, regardless of whether they serve real or not, and to make it easier you can click on the ‘Pubs and Clubs Nearby’ button to take you straight to the pubs and clubs near your location. If you click on any of the entries it will take you to the page for that pub or club (e.g.B33R@33, Horwich  – our current Pub and Cider Pub of the Year) and give you lots of information including which beers you can expect to see on the bar and (if you’re logged in as a member) the quality of the beer based on beer scores by members. Other tabs allow you to add your own scores and to update any other information that may be out of date. Keeping all this information accurate means a much better experience for anyone wanting to try out those venues so you’ll be helping all your fellow members as well as the public at large by checking it out.

With a couple of bank holidays and (apparently) a heatwave on the way, a bit of research on the CAMRA website will reveal lots of places where you can find excellent beer, so whether it be a pint of mild while watching cricket or a mango infused IPA in a micropub, enjoy!
