Torrside brewery is celebrating after scooping gold for the Beer of the Festival at the recent Stockport Beer and Cider Festival. From a selection of around 200 beers, Torrside Brewing’s Bardo, a 9% Imperial Stout, was voted the favourite tipple by thirsty drinkers.

But thanks to the pandemic, the beer nearly didn’t get brewed. In early 2020, Nathan Pratt, of the Sheffield Homebrew Club, won a first prize for Limbo, his 5.5% stout, at the Stockport & S. Manchester (SSM) CAMRA homebrew competition. The reward was to visit a commercial brewery and brew the beer so it could be sold to the public.

Then along came coronavirus and things were put on hold. Finally, two years later, Nathan went to Torrside Brewing in New Mills to brew his winning beer. Nathan also agreed with the Torrside brewers that they should produce an Imperial 9.0% version of the beer at the same time, and this was named Bardo. Both beers made their public debut on Bar Nouveau at the Stockport Beer & Cider Festival in June and quickly sold out.

In late July, Nathan returned to Torrside, where the Chair of SSM CAMRA, John Clarke, presented both Nathan and the brewery with their awards.
Chris Clough from Torrside Brewing said “It was a delight to host Nathan and his enthusiasm is reflected in the fact that the beers have won awards. In fact, they have been so successful that we intend to brew them again in the autumn, and it is likely that some of the Bardo will go into our barrel-aging programme for release later in 2023”.

Nathan added “Thanks to John Clarke and CAMRA for organising the competition and Torrside for hosting me. It has allowed me to experiment and it was great to see my recipes being enjoyed by the public. This has spurred me on and I will certainly be entering some more beer in next year’s competition”.

John Clarke commented, “Our homebrew competition, where beers are blind-tasted by a panel of enthusiasts, publicans and brewers, has been running since 2016 and sets high standards. It covers a variety of styles and gives category winners a chance to work with commercial breweries. We are grateful to Torrside and others for helping to bring their beers to a wider public. As well as featuring at the Stockport Beer & Cider Festival and in local pubs, some of the winning beers have been spotted as far away as London during the summer”.

We recently selected the Gillery in Mossley as its Pub of the Season for Spring 2022.The pub opened in March 2020 and has gone from strength to strength since.  A one-room bar, with a small side room suitable for small meetings, is complemented by a pleasant outdoor drinking area.  Its previous history as a bank is amply evidenced by the architecture of the building, and the polished wooden fittings and wainscoting. The Gillery is ideally situated outside the railway station and on the bus routes from Lower to Upper Mossley. Open from Wednesday to Sunday 12-12, it has four handpumps, and is a good outlet for the local Millstone beers, amongst others. 

 

High Peak, Tameside and North-East Cheshire Branch members recently voted the Beer Shed micro pub in New Mills as its Branch Pub of the Summer 2022.

The pub is located on Market Street in the centre of New Mills close to the small bus station and New Mills Central railway station.  Opened in 2016 this dog friendly pub has gone from strength to strength and provides a pleasant and comfortable place to drink for regular locals and visitors alike. There are usually three changing hand pumped cask beers with one from usually a local brewery plus real
ciders. A positive addition to the real ales and ciders available in the locality.  Its unusual layout consists of a long narrow bar with some table seating, a downstairs room and a small outdoor drinking area at the rear.

The Beer Shed is now firmly on the local pub map and is a well established, friendly and welcoming micro pub well worth a visit and which will probably not be your last.  The photograph shows Branch Chairman Ben Zwierink presenting the award certificate to Russ Degnan, the licensee.

The High Peak, Tameside and North East Cheshire Branch’s Pub of the Winter 2022 award was presented to Robinsons’ Windsor Castle in Marple Bridge. The
licensee, Jo Farrell, has been in charge for 14 years, and these days it is rare to find a licensee dedicated to a particular pub for that length of time. This is a true local and community pub, and is a reflection of  the approach that Jo has to managing it, and of her welcoming outlook for all customers.

Jo ensures that the pub is a base for many activities such as the Thursday quiz, Friday or Saturday night entertainment, and sporting events. Many of these activities and others also benefit charities, including an outdoor fruit and vegetable stall on Fridays and Saturdays, which is due to recommence again soon. It is a fine example of the traditional local of the type getting regrettably rarer these days.

High Peak, Tameside & North East Cheshire Branch members chose the Silly Country in the centre of Droylsden as their Pub of the Year 2022.

It is true to say that, since opening, the pub has much increased the beer range available in the Droylsden area, and is very popular with locals and others alike. A changing range of beers is offered on four handpumps, with a real cider available on a fifth.  This is a pub which is doing an excellent job, with excellent beers and is well deserving of the award. It’s well worth taking the time to visit. Silly Country is situated right in the centre of Droylsden, almost opposite the Metrolink stop and close to several bus routes. Fairfield railway station is a 15-minute walk away.

Our branch Pub of the Season for Autumn was presented to the George Hotel in Hayfield on Saturday 20th November. The comfortable and welcoming pub is in the centre of Hayfield village. On cold days there is a real fire in a magnificent old fashioned range to sit by and warm your cockles. A good variety of hand pulled beers from the Marston’s stable is available and walkers are welcome. All in all it’s a pub well deserving of the award and well worth a visit. On Saturday the 21st August we officially presented the branch Pub of the Year award 202 to Malt Disley in Disley. We could not have a proper presentation in 2020 due to pandemic restrictions.

A small group of branch members braved the atrocious weather to attend the branch Club of the Year presentation at the Buxworth (or Bugsworth ) Social Club on Saturday the 21st of August

A couple of excellent beers were available on the day. Pictured is the club bar manager who was delighted to receive the award. The club allows non-members entrance and it is well worth the walk from either Whaley Bridge or Chinley. (ideally, on a nice day !)
